WHAT'S IN A NAME?

kopriva is a family name that, translated, means “nettle” in Czech. The Cassidy Ranch, where we farmed our grapes, has multiple stands of nettle growing along the creek bed. Nettle, which grows ubiquitously throughout the northern hemisphere, has been used for centuries for its’ medicinal, nutritional and physical properties. We feel the nettle is an accurate metaphor and symbol for our wine; a wine with a spine of acidity like a stalk of kopriva.

The original Cassidy Ranch has a history that dates back over a century. During much of that time fruit crops of pears and apples were farmed. Over the ensuing years, the property was subdivided and grapevines were eventually cultivated on the remaining acreage. Under our tenure, kopriva farmed the twelve acre vineyard and realized our first vintage, crop to bottle, in 2005.
